LilSugar's New Toys for Summer

Warm weather's not just an opportunity to shed your jacket, but to get the kids up, moving, and outside. While the sun may be all it takes to get mama outdoors, tots often need a little enticement — that's where the toys come into play. We've checked out the hottest new toys of the season and have narrowed down our favorites that will have lil ones begging to enjoy the fresh air. Check them out!

Minnie Bow-riffic Bubble Tea Party Set ($15)

toys
Sure your lil one can throw a tea party, but can she throw one where the tea cups actually blow bubbles? The Minnie Bow-riffic Bubble Tea Party Set offers tots plenty of ways to blow bubbles from traditional bubble wands to tea cups that actually serve as wands themselves. This set is too cute for backyard and beachside tea parties.

Little Tikes Sandy Lagoon Waterpark ($50)

toys
More than just a water table or a sand table, the Little Tikes Sandy Lagoon Waterpark comes with two characters that race down the water slides, play in the pool, and try to escape the dump bucket. A sand spinner serves as a funnel for incoming sand, and shovels allow tots to dig deep. There's no shortage of play opportunities with this backyard toy.

ZX Cross Bow ($21)

LilSugar's New Toys for Summer
Call it the Katniss effect: the hottest accessory of the season seems to be the bow and arrow! The ZX Cross Bow shoots safe foam ammo up to 45 feet.

Razor Flash Rider 360 ($110)

LilSugar's New Toys for Summer
More than just a trike, Razor's Flash Rider 360 will have tots spinning their way around the neighborhood this Summer. In addition to a large front wheel, the rider has two caster rear wheels that send the trike spinning when pedaled. But best of all is the spark bar that lowers a flint pack to the ground to create sparks when the bar is pulled.

Big Wheels

LilSugar's New Toys for Summer
Introduced at the 1969 Toy Fair, the Big Wheel was a staple in many American homes by the late '70s. Made of plastic, they were cheaper than traditional tricycles and considered to be safer, due to their thick wheels and inability to tip over. This Summer, the Original Big Wheel is back, looking the same as the version mom and dad loved as kids. The current version also has a hand brake designed to create bigger and better spinouts than ever before!

Nerf Super Soaker Lightning Storm ($25)

toys
Consider this the lifeguard's worst nightmare — a water gun that holds 35 ounces of water! The Nerf Super Soaker Lightning Storm may be one of the most powerful super soakers to date — perfect for a hot Summer day!

Crayola Outdoor Colored Bubbles ($10)

bubbles
After feedback from parents that couldn't get the colors off of their hands, Crayola has reformulated their Crayola Outdoor Colored Bubbles with a solution that can be washed off with soap and water, so bring on the colorful bubble displays!

Little Tikes 2-in-1 Garden Cart and Wheelbarrow ($40)

LilSugar's New Toys for Summer
Let the lil ones help with the gardening this Spring! Little Tikes' 2-in-1 Garden Cart and Wheelbarrow comes with a working water sprayer, space for flower beds, and tools that are perfectly sized for small working hands!

Illuminator Bubble Blaster Glow Solution ($15)

LilSugar's New Toys for Summer
Glow in the dark was one of the biggest trends at Toy Fair this year, and now the first glow-in-the-dark bubbles are available. Imperial Toys' Illuminator Bubble Blaster Glow Solution is perfect for outdoor evening play. Kids activate the glowing bubble solution and then load it into the blaster for hours of bubble fun.

Icee Deluxe Slushy Machine ($25)

LilSugar's New Toys for Summer
Few treats are as synonymous with Summer as the Slushy. The new Icee Deluxe Slushy Machine allows tots to create their own shaved ice confections in one of two included flavors.

All of these toys look REALLY fun! One thing...we have played with the colored bubbles and they are a aweful!!! Wash off...yes! But who the heck has time to wash the children after everytime they play with these bubbles? They seem like a great idea but...no!! If you do happen to recive these colored bubbles as a gift I would recommend playing with them when the kids have on swimsuits and can easily be rinsed off in a sprinkler! I can not wait to buy the minnie mouse tea set! That looks like a good time!

kids, dress up, tori spelling, graduation
Liam recently put a dark colored piece of square cardboard on his head and said, "Look at me mama. Take a picture. I'm in college!"

He had seen a graduation cap before on TV and thought that meant college.

I said "Yes, you will wear that when you graduate college. Do you know what college is?"

Liam responded confidently, "Yes mama... It's where big kids become adults."

I smiled and loved his enthusiasm and interest. So in simple terms I talked him through the important educational journey of kindergarten, elementary school, high school and then college. He listened very closely. Then I asked him if he knew what he wanted to be in life (hey- he's a smart kid. He could handle the question).

He quickly replied, "A skateboarder!"

I said, "That's a great hobby and profitable for some but if you decide to just do that for fun what job will you do to make money?"

Without missing a beat he quickly and enthusiastically replied, "Insurance company!"

Ha ha! Time will tell. At what age do you start to ask your kids what interests them and what they want to do with their lives?

14

My son told me at the age of four that he wanted to be an artist. I asked why, and he responded: "Because they only work a few hours a day! They start late and finish early".

Sometimes you just wonder where they get it from :-)

My two older kids LOVE talking about what they are going to be when they grown up.  Right now my 7 year old wants to live in TX on a ranch have 6 horses ,7 dogs, a couple barn cats, one child and "live and work off the land" :) we call her Laura Ingalls.  My son says something new everyday but it's never been insurance ;) My prayer is they find what they love and do it with their whole heart!

May 8, 2012

LOL well I guess working for an insurance company would probably be a stable career. Liam is a practical little guy :D

Hahaha, love kids views on life of adults! As many of the reactions above, my kids started the conversation on this subject on their own. At the age of three my eldest son wanted to become an astronaut. As he got older and started elementary he started questioning what he needed to become one. He became slightly upset when he heard the amount of study-time involved (is not that keen on studying) but it gave him something to aim for, it motivated him more. I will be a bit amazed (and probably utterly stressed out) when in 20 years time, I'll find him flying to the moon, but nevertheless I love hearing his dreams.

And a bit off topic, but every time when you share some of Liams world the song 'Monkey Man' by The Specials and later covered by Amy Winehouse pops into my head ... for DAYS!!

wow! such a bright kid!  you should hook him up with a date with tony hawk!  if he wants to skateboard why not with the best? ;)  ask all the kids every so often what they wanna do when they grow up and try and foster that desire!  you never know! he could be the next Tony Hawk!

My 13 year old wants to be a meterologist because they "get paid a lot to be wrong" (how do you argue with that!!!) My  5 year old says he is going to play for the Boston Bruins and he invites every girl that he meets. He tells them that when he is 18 he will have a car so he will pick them up and drive them to the ice arena! And my 8 year old goes through all the typical boy dream: policeman, fireman, construction worker...but he plans on movie to LA to do it. (Maybe he has secret dreams of being an actor!)

Over the years, Dean and I have curated quite the collection of artwork from our kids, and I know all of my fellow momistas have many of your own mini masterpieces to exhibit. With Mother’s Day around the corner, it’s a safe bet that lots of little ones will be adding to their portfolios, and while they might not be ready for the Getty (yet), that’s no reason not to display your kids art with style and creativity. Here are a few ideas how:

1. Collage it

5 Creative Ways to Display Your Kids Artwork

5 Creative Ways to Display Your Kids Artwork

This is a great way to show off all of your little artist’s works and incorporate their talents into your design scheme with style and sophistication. If you’re handy on the computer, you can take the time to scan a number of paintings into the computer, resize them, and have the collage printed and framed. If you’re looking for a speedier solution, hire a designer to put your new poster together.

2. Create a Coffee Table Book

5 Creative Ways to Display Your Kids Artwork
Shutterfly’s award-winning photo books are a great, inexpensive way to showcase your kiddie’s works. Their process guides you toward through a few simple steps, and with just a few clicks, it’s on its way. This is also a great way to remember and save your children’s works for years after they’re grown and the finger paintings have come to an end.

3. Note Cards and Stationary

5 Creative Ways to Display Your Kids Artwork
Your family and friends will love receiving notes adorned with art your kids made. There are a number of online printing services that allow you to upload scanned paintings and print the art on card stock – it’s a great way to amp up thank you notes from the kids!

4. Clipboards

5 Creative Ways to Display Your Kids Artwork
For parents whose little artists are especially prolific, a fun, easy way to exhibit their latest masterpieces is to mount stylish clipboards on the wall and swap out the older paintings with their latest and greatest.

5. Table it

5 Creative Ways to Display Your Kids Artwork
A fabulous hands-on way to immortalize your little one’s artwork is to incorporate it into your actual furniture. With a few simple steps and a little patience, you can transform their paintings into a table top for their playroom or nursery. All you need is:

  • A wooden table (or chair)
  • The masterpieces you’ve chosen to use (or color photocopies if you’d prefer)
  • A ruler
  • Your craft knife
  • A clean foam brush
  • A flat nylon brush
  • Mod podge hard coat

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you’re just a few steps away from an artsy DIY table:

  1. Measure and use your craft knife to trim the paintings to a uniform size.
  2. Position the resized artwork on the tabletop in a grid or other desired pattern. Using the flat prush, apply the mod podge to the back of the artwork and secure in place. Let dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  3. Once the mod podge has dried, use your foam brush to apply the topcoat of mod podge to the entire table. You’ll need to add several top coats; the trick is to let each coat dry completely before adding another. If you follow the directions on the bottle, you can’t go wrong!

And voila – you’ve created the perfect table for your little one to create more works of art.

6. Frame it

5 Creative Ways to Display Your Kids Artwork
For your favorite works, never underestimate the power of a fabulous frame to punch up any picture or painting. Mixed in with your existing décor, your kid’s work will look sophisticated and fun.

How do you show off your kid’s artwork? I want to see your creative ways to exhibit their artwork so be sure to leave a comment and upload photos!

I honestly was just thinking what am I going to do with all of this stuff! It's like you were reading my mind, now I KNOW you have some psychic ability!! I love the clip board idea and will try the artbook. What a great gift for grandparents too. I sound like an infomercial...

I love all these ideas! I absolutely adore Shutterfly!!! I have many photo books and I also make them and give them as gifts!!!

A neat, crafty idea I have to display kid's art is to go to a consignment store or thrift store and buy flat baking pans like cookie sheets and pizza pans (different sizes and shapes is fun!) Then, take them home and wash them, trying to scrub off greese or any other dried on food.

After they are clean and dried, you drill holes in them to hang them on the wall. Now you are ready to spray paint them fun colors- I did yellow and blue. Once they are dry you hang them anywhere, in any order (I went round, rectangle, round, rectangle, etc) and use magnets to hang your child's art work or photos of your children!

Just make sure when you buy the pans that they are a type of metal that holds magnets! I bought 2 neat pans that did not work but I didn't find out until I got home and spray painted them! I would upload a picture, but I don't know how =(

Going to have to try the collage one!  I feel guilty if I recycle them, but there are just too many to save all of them

May 8, 2012
14

We are not nearly as fancy. We hang it in the garage, so we get to look at it all the time. Its a great way to keep everything. Before the start of a new school year, we take it all down, keep a few that we love and then start again. The kids love choosing a place to put it on the walls.  Im sure the neighbors drive by and think what the hell is all the stuff on the walls! I love that it keeps the clutter outside, and knowing me I would strive to do these fab projects and the art work would end up in a pile on my desk and I would never get it done!

May 8, 2012
15

Am starting a box in which to toss all items needing to be scanned, so I can put together some of those collages & picture books. Great ideas!

In the mean time, I also loved the clipboards --- how simple is THAT? Yep, gonna get me some of those this weekend & hang 'em in baby girl's room so she can enjoy her art work. First graders bring home SO MANY papers, & she doodles on the back of all of them. We have more art than we know what to do with. Thanks for the great ideas!

I love these ideas that I recognize as taken from other people's blogs. I'd love them even more if there was a more obvious credit to each original source than the TINY credit at the bottom. There's nothing wrong with sharing great ideas, but I appreciate when lesser known bloggers make sure to clearly (and rather obviously) credit original sources.

When I was little my mom would buy a binder with a cover pocket and she would have us make a cover stating the year or school year and our age.  Then at the end of the school year whether we were in school or not she would have us go through a basket of our work that she kept in her closet.  We got to pick between 20 and 30 pieces that we liked and then she placed them in clear protective sheets and then they went on a bookshelf in our bedroom so we could look through them and show them to who ever we wanted when ever we wanted.  It is something I plan to continue with my children.

Whether or not you were an avid reader before baby, books will become a big part of your post-lil-one life. My 1-year-old is already obsessed with Sandra Boynton, Eric Carle, and any peekaboo book, but I'm already trying to introduce her to my childhood favorites, including The Velveteen Rabbit. I'm obviously not alone in my love of the classic book, as it was also the jumping off point for this amazing shower, planned by Kristeen Labrot Events for her sister-in-law. It almost has a wedding feeling to it with all the gorgeous florals, whimsical details, and charming cake, but the bunny proves it's all baby!

The Invitation

shower
Host and Los Angeles-based party planner Kristeen LaBrot hand-made the invitations by spray-mounting thick card stock onto burlap from Jo-Ann Fabric and sewed a tiny button at the top.

The Theme

shower
The Velveteen Rabbit, the mom-to-be's favorite childhood book, was the shower's inspiration. The book itself acted as a guest book; guests were asked to write a note to the baby on the book's inner cover.

The gender-neutral theme worked well since the parents didn't know their baby's sex. The host used the book's textural elements, including rustic burlap, cotton, velvet, and wood, along with vintage spools of thread and small jars of buttons, to continue the theme.

The Cake

shower
The gorgeous cake, designed by Cake Goodness, was an understated take on the rabbit theme, inspired by glassware the host found at Anthropologie. Fujiko's Flowers created bright floral arrangements in vintage depression glass, birch wrapped vases, and mason jars.

Straws and Soda

shower
Boylan’s Vintage Vanilla Creme Soda, the mom-to-be's favorite, became a party favors after Kristeen soaked off the original labels off and designed custom labels to replace them. To spruce up the straws, she tied them with grosgrain ribbons and even sewed tiny buttons onto each one.

Liam

I’m not sure if it’s the baby bump that gave us away, but Liam recently had some interesting observations about Dean and me…

"Mommy and daddy I know you have sex! I'm gonna hide under your bed and videotapes it and then you'll say ‘Liam you're right, we have sex.’"

It’s hard to keep a straight face around this little guy.

How old were your kids when you had to tackle this tricky topic?

My daughter was 3. She was napping at the time. Good thing we had the door locked just in case. She had gotten down onto the floor and yelled through the crack on the bottom of the door.... What are you guys doing in there?

Needless to say... it stopped everything cold. But almost 20 years later we still get a great laugh out of it.

We were in the bedroom with the door locked and two of my girls were home taking a nap when suddenly we heard two voices "I see your feets jumpin up and down"! Haven't had the sex talk yet, but with songs using the word "sex" and "sexy" our 5 year old knows the word, just not what it means (she sings "I"m sexy and I know it" like a champ!LOL). She has inquired about how a baby gets out of the belly (she thought you pooped it out ;-) so I had to try and explain child birth to her...she walked away from that talk telling me she's never having babies!!LMAO I know the question of what is sex is gonna come soon though...how did you other moms explain it??

Apr 24, 2012

Im a veteran Mom. Single while raising my son & daughter. My daughter told me that she had 3 more yrs until she could have sex coz her brother told her when she is 13 you have sex. I asked her brother and he said matter-of-factly "yes." He was 12.5. I asked why he thought that. He said all the movies the babysitter lets them watch all the teens have sex. I told him sex is NOT for teens its a gift from God when two people fall in love and get married. He asked "for how long?" I said "forever." Both my kids eyes were as big as saucers and they said in unison "ewwwwww! Grandma & Grandpa?" I tried to console them by putting my foot in my mouth and saying, "we all have to get used to the idea that our parents have sex to have their babies, us." My son looked distraught. He asked, "Mom...u haven't....have you?" I said, "No I haven't, but a lot of people do." He was satisfied and walked away. An hour later he came back with a betrayed look and said, "Mom I know you had sex....twice!" I was caught; the jig was up. I confessed, "I did James, but don't tell your father."  He smiled happy with his new secret and skipped away. A mother has to find entertainment where she can find it. He told me recently it is a wonder that he knows anything about sex...."but I figured it out." He has been with the same wonderful girl for 20 years and they still act like teenage bunnies. But no grandchildren for me. Such is life. Love you guys!

Momvo: Mini Mommies
Posted by Tori Spelling on Apr 12, 2012

baby
It's fascinating to me that from the time little girls can walk and talk they already have the mommy gene. It's so natural to them to want to be mothering and nurturing. Stella, from such an early age, was obsessed with holding her baby, changing her baby, pretending to feed it, and putting it down for naps. I often hear her calmly yet firmly reprimanding her baby doll for acting up. After she gives her tough love I see her hug the baby and tell her "I love you.” It's beyond beautiful!

momvo

So, as women, is it just in our nature from birth to be mommies? Do your daughters play Mommy too? I’d love to hear your take below.

Yes!! When I was a kid I of course had my baby dolls but I played favorites, which I'm sure has scarred them for life. lol Anyway my favorite doll was my Cabbage Patch Kid named Derek. I brought Derek EVERYWHERE. I had a baby stroller for him and brought him to the grocery store where he fell out into a puddle. (Guess I wasn't a great mom lol). No it got to the point though where my mom had to sew Derek's arm back on, he had stains all over him, I just loved the hec out of that doll. It's so funny how little girls just have that instinct in them. I remember going through ads for baby stuff with my friends and we would pick out the stroller, car seat, etc we would want for our kids.

So anyway, I still have Derek. When I went to college my younger brother and his friends thought it would be fun to bash his head in. Boys will be boys I guess?? I FLIPPED out when I came home. Derek's head was in pieces. A few years ago (I'm in my 30s now) my mom sent me Derek, she had glued his head back together and bought him a new outfit. He now sits in my closet with some other stuff from my childhood. I hope if I have kids one day to pass Derek along, but I'm sure they will want a baby that is not stained with a cracked head. lol

I never played with baby dolls, I remeber my Grandmother commenting on it when I grew older and I never wanted children. So perhaps you can tell when children are very little if they are going to want children or not. It would be nice btw if families supported your decision either way.

Stella the cute little bug that she is watches her mommy. She learns from you what mothers are supposed to be like. Having younger siblings helps in that as well. They learn what it is to love a "baby" by the way we love them. If Stella is a loving affectionate "mommy" to her dolls then she has a great role model in her own mommy. Liam is such a thoughful insightful person and that has come from his loving parents. Your kids take with them what you teach them, and so far you are doing a great job with your angels.

We make these all the time, for the past 4 years anyways. We use them at graduations, baby showers, birthdays, christmas, etc etc. We make oreo balls and sugar cookie balls for the inside of them. My next oreo balls are going to be dipped in white chocolate and placed on golf tees to resemble golf balls -- for my husbands 30th birthday!! I cant wait! Oh, and I even made a how to video. :)

The other evening Liam was excited to divulge his new discovery:

“Mama I heard of a game called Spin the Bottle. Will you play it with me mama? I spin it and then you give me a big kiss!"

I’m glad his days of real Spin the Bottle are long in the distance…

What have your kids been discovering lately?

My 6 year old Hudson recently discovered that Santa and the EAster bunny are not real and yesterday when I asked him what he was really hoping for in his Easter basker replies: you mean from you? :) OH well!  But he also is catching wind of boys and girls liking each other and dating when they are older, so yesterday when I asked him if him and I could go out for an icecream date just the two of us, he said, "that's gross!" :(  I told him that it just means special time with him and I. He keeps me going!  Liam looks so cute in that pic

We’re excited to bring you another great article from LilSugar, a fantastic source for mamas who want advice and news about everything from packing healthy lunches to mastering the art of stroller chic. This week, we’re featuring their Spring Bedding for Kids Rooms.

With warmer days ahead, freshening up for Spring is on the minds of many moms. An easy way to lighten up your kids' rooms? Ditch their heavy Fall and Winter bedding for cheerful, bright Spring linens. From cribs to big-kid beds, some of the best seasonal linens for sunny days and warm nights are right here.

Lush Lavender

spring bedding
A subtle nod to Spring, Annette Tatum's soft Forest Orchid duvet ($320) reverses to a Grande Stripe Orchid pattern, which can be folded over for contrast.

Baby Blossoms

spring bedding
New this season to DwellStudio's line of baby and kids bedding, the Rosette Nursery Collection ($34–$550) is a modern take on the classic floral. Muted hues and graphic prints make this a gorgeous pick for the design-conscious mom.

Baby Blues (and Greens)

spring bedding
A soothing ensemble for your little one's crib, the three-piece Sprout set ($476) includes a patterned bumper, solid cotton sheet, and a tailored crib skirt.

Your Prepregnancy Bucket List

Bold Blooms

spring bedding
Blossom into Spring with this cheerful hand-appliquéd and embroidered How Does Your Garden Bedding Grow? set ($199–$229) from Land of Nod with a pillow sham. Soft pink sheets are the perfect backdrop for bold, feminine blooms.

Thoroughly Modern

spring bedding
A modern look that could function well in either a boy's or girl's room, Oilo's Modern Berries ($175) print comes in 300-thread-count sateen with a coordinating sheet set, bed skirt, and shams.

Dreaming of Exotic Destinations

spring bedding
Inspired by the Indian beach town of Goa, Rikshaw Design's soft aqua and green Goa Twin Bedding Set ($268) is hand-quilted and made of 100 percent cotton voile. A beautiful set that works for both big and little kids rooms, it comes with a twin-size quilt and a standard quilted sham in a drawstring pouch.

Playful Patterns

spring bedding
A chic look that will grow with your little one, the Suzani Teal Collection by House Inc. ($256) features contrasting patterns in teal, chartreuse, turquoise, baby blue, and rust. Mix and match the pieces that best fit your child's room for a unique, personalized look.

A Splash of Sophistication

spring bedding
Feminine without being frilly, Serena & Lily's Marina Collection ($48–$280) boasts a subtle peacock pattern in cheerful shades of aqua and citrus.

Solid Stripes

spring bedding
A crisp look for your big boy's room, the Serena and Lily Ronan Collection ($68–$220) features contrasting navy, lime, and clean white stripes and prints.

Garden Variety

spring bedding
Pint-sized prepsters couldn't ask for a more perfect Spring print than Lilly Pulitzer's She's Daffy ($58–$228), made exclusively for Garnet Hill. Bold daffodils are sure to brighten up any room, and both the duvet and sham reverse to yellow and white wavy pinstripes.

I wonder if Tori buys organic mattresses and bedding for her kids. I've just recently discovered the option to buy these with no nasty chemicals. They're really expensive, but it seems worth it. In California mattresses are sprayed with nasty flame retardants. So you can get around it by getting natural/organic mattresses that use latex, wool and natural cotton. Wool is naturally flame retardant, so that's how they get around the chemicals.
