For your first anniversary the traditional gift is paper – this can sound boring but don’t be fooled. Play it up by giving two paper tickets to your favorite band’s concert or put together a collage of your favorite photos in a nice frame –both are meaningful gift ideas that celebrate your time together! For Dean I wrote a love note for him and rolled it up in an antique bottle corked with sand and shells we got married on the beach in Fiji. I then drew a romantic bubble bath for two complete with champagne and floated it in the tub :


On your second anniversary cotton is traditionally the name of the game and it’s a great opportunity to splurge on an indulgence like high thread count bedding light candles in the room and top the freshly-sheeted bed with little love notes or DIY love gift certificates – or get all Fifty Shades of Grey on your partner and sprinkle some fun sex toys. Won’t he be surprised when you pull back the duvet!. Also his-and-hers monogrammed bath towels get big smiles if you promise to soap his back in an anniversary shower built for two!


For your third anniversary you’ll want to give some leather. An idea I love for this is to give leather luggage to take on a trip – the vacation is the real gift of course but the leather suitcase or duffel is a great way to package the present. To be budget-friendly shop for a vintage suitcase/duffel. Flea markets have amazing ones that come with memories of their own as you two are sure to make new ones. For our third anniversary I made Dean a leather cuff with our initials embossed in it. It was inexpensive and very personal!


For celebrating your fourth year linen and silk are the traditional presents as are flowers or fruits. You could go for a silk robe or pajamas maybe a matching pair for the two of you. And a monogram always adds that personal touch. For our 4th year anniversary I went for a version of the traditional flower gift for Dean. We renewed our vows so I got him an antique engraved wedding band in rose gold. It's not exactly a flower but it was my personal nod at the floral tradition by going with rose gold.


When celebrating your fifth year of marriage it's a big one! wood is the tradition and a beautiful gift is to plant a tree. If there is a fruit that you both love like lemon or avocado plant one of those trees - it will bear fruit for years.  If you do this I’d make a homemade wood sign to put in the ground that says something like "We planted this with our love!" and then put your fifth anniversary date. It’s such a great representation of love and life together. For our fifth anniversary I built Dean a wood bench. I had little construction experience but lots of determination. I went and got reclaimed wood from a lumberyard and built a very simple bench from plans I found online. Then I painted on it "Grow Old With Me..." with our names and our kids’ names on the back. It sits outside our house under a tree and I picture us 80 years old sitting on that bench holding hands!


For the sixth year which we just celebrated the theme is iron. At first I was thrown off but as it turns out iron is a great gift. If he likes to cook hello Dean! iron-handled pots/pans can be amazing for your hunky chef. But if he's a sports guy then no-brainer go for golf clubs. Not only will you hit the nail on the head but it’s also a great gift that will most definitely be appreciated over the years. A cute small token is a lucky antique Iron horseshoe that can be wrapped up on top of your gift with a note saying "I got LUCKY when I met you!" I'm a sap for the cute factor.


Now that we've discussed all the anniversary gifts you can get for your hubby I can't forget to mention how thoughtful my husband is when picking out anniversary gifts for me. He started this amazing tradition on our first anniversary: every year he gives me a new band and slips it on my finger and expresses his love and vows as if it were our wedding day. 

It’s so unbelievably thoughtful and intimate not to mention I get to constantly change up my wedding band! While you might love the thought behind that sentiment you also might be thinking that gifts like that can get pricey. But it's not about the cost of the band it's about the meaning behind it. He always goes for antique because he knows that's my passion. In fact we found my original wedding band at a small antique store for 300 and there are incredible antique bands/rings for even under that price. 

I just love that in 50 years I'll have the most amazing wedding band collection to pass on to my girls! 

So that's the first 6 years! I can't wait to think of inventive and romantic gifts for the love of my life as our journey continues throughout the years.

Ingredients

• 12 slices day-old bread cut into 1 inch cubes
• 2 8 ounce packages cream cheese cut into 1 inch cubes
• 1 cup fresh blueberries
• 12 eggs beaten
• 2 cups milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/3 cup maple syrup
• 1 cup white sugar
• 2 tablespoons cornstarch
• 1 cup water
• 1 cup fresh blueberries
• 1 tablespoon butter

Directions

1. Lightly grease a 9x13” baking dish. Arrange half of the bread cubes in the dish and top with cream cheese cubes. Sprinkle 1 cup blueberries over the cream cheese and top with remaining bread cubes.
2. In a large bowl mix the eggs milk vanilla extract and syrup. Pour over the bread cubes. Cover and refrigerate overnight. This allows the bread to full absorb the mixture and for the flavors to really develop and mix.
3. Remove the bread mixture from the refrigerator about 30 minutes prior to baking. Preheat the oven to 350
4. Bake covered for about 30 minutes then uncover and continue baking 25 to 30 minutes until center is firm and surface is lightly browned.
5. In a medium saucepan mix the sugar cornstarch and water. Bring to a boil. Stirring constantly cook 3 to 4 minutes. Mix in the remaining 1 cup blueberries. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes until the blueberries burst. Stir in the butter and pour over the baked French toast

Tori’s Tip: A great trick to avoiding purple-dyed treats when baking with blueberries is to lightly coat the berries in a little bit of flour before adding them into the recipe. 

Lemon Ricotta Pancakes from Gjelina

Ingredients

• 2 cups ricotta
• 2 cups mixed fresh berries
• 1/3 cup plus 4 tablespoons sugar divided
• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup chestnut flour
• 2 tablespoons baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
• 4 large eggs separated
• 2 tablespoons finely grated lemon zest
• 1 1/2 cups whole milk
• Melted unsalted butter for brushing

Directions

1. Line a fine-mesh strainer with cheesecloth; set over a small bowl. Add ricotta to strainer and let drain for 15 minutes; set aside.
2. Gently combine berries 1/3 cup sugar and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Let macerate tossing occasionally until sugar dissolves and juices are released about 15 minutes.
3. Whisk both flours baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Using an electric mixer beat egg whites in a medium bowl until frothy. Gradually beat in 2 tablespoons sugar beating until peaks form. Whisk the egg yolks remaining 2 tablespoons sugar and zest in another medium bowl to blend. Whisk in milk. Add the yolk mixture to dry ingredients; whisk just to blend. Add half of the egg white mixture; fold just to blend. Fold in ricotta then remaining egg white mixture.
4. Heat a griddle or large heavy nonstick skillet over medium-low heat; brush with melted butter. Using scant 1/2 cup batter for each pancake and working in batches ladle batter onto griddle and cook until bottom is golden brown edges are dry and bubbles form on top of pancake about 1 1/2 minutes. Flip pancakes and cook until browned and just cooked through about 1 minute. Transfer pancakes to plates. Serve with berries and their juices.

Moving right along to savory…

Onion Goat Cheese and Mushroom Fritatta from Chow

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 tablespoon unsalted butter plus more for coating the pan
• 1 medium yellow onion medium dice
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme leaves
• 8 ounces cremini mushrooms
• 4 ounces chèvre fresh goat cheese
• 9 large eggs
• 2 tablespoons whole milk
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt plus more for seasoning the onions and mushrooms

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Generously butter the wells of a 12-well muffin pan with butter; set aside.
2. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil and the measured butter in a medium frying pan over medium heat until the oil is shimmering and the butter has melted.
3. Add the diced onion and cook stirring sparingly until it is a deep golden brown adjusting the heat as necessary if it starts to brown too much about 30 minutes. Season well with salt and pepper add the thyme and stir to combine. Transfer the mixture to a medium bowl.
4. Meanwhile clean trim and slice the mushrooms 1/2 inch thick; set aside. Crumble the goat cheese into pea-sized pieces and set aside.
5. Return the frying pan to medium heat add the remaining tablespoon of oil and heat until shimmering. Add the sliced mushrooms season with salt and pepper and cook stirring rarely until golden brown about 10 minutes. Add to the bowl with the onion. Add the goat cheese to the bowl and stir to evenly combine; set aside.
6. Place the eggs and milk in a large bowl and whisk until the eggs are broken up and evenly combined with the milk about 1 minute. Add the measured salt and whisk to combine.
7. Divide the onion-mushroom-cheese mixture evenly among the wells of the prepared muffin pan. Fill each well almost to the top with the egg mixture.
8. Bake until each frittata is puffed and the center is just set about 12 to 15 minutes. Remove the pan to a wire rack until it’s cool enough to handle about 5 minutes the frittatas will deflate. Run a small knife around the perimeter of each well to loosen and remove the frittatas. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Grits Cheese and Onion Souffles from Bon Appetit

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons 1/4 stick butter
• 3/4 cup chopped onion
• 3/4 cup chopped leek
• 1 1/2 cups whole milk divided
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/3 cup quick-cooking grits
• 4 large eggs separated
• 3 green onions chopped
• 1 cup packed grated hot pepper Monterey Jack cheese about 4 ounces divided

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Butter four 1 1/4-cup soufflé dishes. 
2. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and leek; sauté 3 minutes then mix in 1 1/4 cups whole milk and 1/2 teaspoon salt then grits and bring to simmer. Reduce heat to low cover and cook until thick stirring occasionally about 5 minutes.
3. Meanwhile whisk remaining 1/4 cup milk and yolks in small bowl to blend.
4. Remove grits from heat. Stir in yolk mixture then green onions and 3/4 cup cheese.
5. Beat whites in medium bowl until stiff but not dry. Fold into grits in 3 additions. Divide mixture among prepared dishes mixture will come all the way to top of dishes. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup cheese.
6. Bake soufflés until puffed and brown on top about 18 minutes. Serve immediately.

And whether you go savory or sweet you still need a yummy drink to wash it down! Try sipping on this refreshing Apricot Bellini from Serious Eats:

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounces apricot nectar
• 3/4 ounce apricot brandy
• 3/4 ounce cognac
• ice
• 3 ounces sparkling wine
• mint sprig for garnish

Directions

1. Combine apricot nectar cognac and apricot brandy in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled champagne flute
2. Add sparkling wine and stir gently. Garnish with a mint sprig and serve immediately.

After trying any or all of these delicious recipes I'd still push for that foot massage!  Have a Happy Mother's Day!!

Even though you’re mixing it up your patterns should still have some uniting element to tie it all together. Sticking within a color scheme is a great example of how you can create a thread that unifies the outfit and keeps your patterns from clashing or looking busy.  Another great way is to go uniform with your texture – satin top with satin pants will look clean no matter how many patterns are involved.

2. Balance the pattern sizes




Two large patterns paired together will look off just as two small patterns can look dizzying. Mixing a small pattern with a large one strikes a balance that works well together and evens out the ensemble.

3. Stay away from competing or matchy-matchy pattern choices




Florals are great but you don’t want to be the floral lady decked out head-to-toe in flowers. Instead if you’re wearing a floral skirt balance it with a striped top. It’s the difference between “wow!’ and “whoa!”

4. Give your prints some room to breathe


Separating patterns with a neutral solid can go a long way. A busy skirt with a patterned scarf will look sleek with a neutral blouse to space it out. This is a great way to dip your toe into pattern mixing without going full-throttle if you’re just trying it out.

5. Embrace old favorites


It can take a while to feel really comfortable boldly mixing wild patterns so a good jumping off point is to wear patterns you already have in your closet like leopard or houndstooth paired with something a little edgier. It is truly the best place to start and you’re more likely to feel confident which means you’re more likely to look great.

If you follow these simple rules there’s no way you’ll mess it up – so get out there and start mixing it up!

Be honest – how many leather-bound books have you read lately? If you’re like me your book collection is probably a medley of hard cover tomes mixed with paperback beach reads – no shame in that! But don’t toss aside those paperback books – instead recover them in a paper that’s more suited to your taste. 2. Color coordinate your shelves

• Your craft knife
• A clean foam brush
• A flat nylon brush
• Mod podge hard coat

Once you’ve gathered your supplies you’re just a few steps away from an artsy DIY table:

1. Measure and use your craft knife to trim the paintings to a uniform size.
2. Position the resized artwork on the tabletop in a grid or other desired pattern. Using the flat prush apply the mod podge to the back of the artwork and secure in place. Let dry completely before moving on to the next step.
3. Once the mod podge has dried use your foam brush to apply the topcoat of mod podge to the entire table. You’ll need to add several top coats; the trick is to let each coat dry completely before adding another. If you follow the directions on the bottle you can’t go wrong!

And voila – you’ve created the perfect table for your little one to create more works of art. 

6. Frame it


For your favorite works never underestimate the power of a fabulous frame to punch up any picture or painting. Mixed in with your existing décor your kid’s work will look sophisticated and fun.

Spray paint is an easy and inexpensive way to add pops of color to your decor. Scavenge through the aisles of your local thrift stores in search of diamonds in the rough.


Lay out newspaper and place items face up. Hold spray paint can about 12 inches away and use a fluid back and forth motion to cover evenly. Let dry in a well-ventilated area for about 20-30 minutes and then add another coat of paint. When completely dry flip over and repeat.


Have fun arranging your new finds on bookshelves coffee tables or anywhere that needs a splash of unexpected color!

You can upload pictures of your favorite dishes at restaurants and give reviews for your friends to see and get recommendations based on your likes dislikes and your location. 

If there is a restaurant that you want to try or a dish that you think sounds delicious you can “want it” so that the next time you’re in the neighborhood Forkly will remind you to swing by for a bite. You can also follow people whose tastes you share.

We’re excited to bring you another great article from LilSugar a fantastic source for mamas who want advice and news about everything from packing healthy lunches to mastering the art of stroller chic. This week we’re featuring their Velveteen Rabbit Baby Shower.

Whether or not you were an avid reader before baby books will become a big part of your post-lil-one life. My 1-year-old is already obsessed with Sandra Boynton Eric Carle and any peekaboo book but I'm already trying to introduce her to my childhood favorites including The Velveteen Rabbit. I'm obviously not alone in my love of the classic book as it was also the jumping off point for this amazing shower planned by Kristeen Labrot Events for her sister-in-law. It almost has a wedding feeling to it with all the gorgeous florals whimsical details and charming cake but the bunny proves it's all baby!

The Invitation


Host and Los Angeles-based party planner Kristeen LaBrot hand-made the invitations by spray-mounting thick card stock onto burlap from Jo-Ann Fabric and sewed a tiny button at the top.

The Theme


The Velveteen Rabbit the mom-to-be's favorite childhood book was the shower's inspiration. The book itself acted as a guest book; guests were asked to write a note to the baby on the book's inner cover.

The gender-neutral theme worked well since the parents didn't know their baby's sex. The host used the book's textural elements including rustic burlap cotton velvet and wood along with vintage spools of thread and small jars of buttons to continue the theme.

The Cake


The gorgeous cake designed by Cake Goodness was an understated take on the rabbit theme inspired by glassware the host found at Anthropologie. Fujiko's Flowers created bright floral arrangements in vintage depression glass birch wrapped vases and mason jars.

Straws and Soda


Boylan’s Vintage Vanilla Creme Soda the mom-to-be's favorite became a party favors after Kristeen soaked off the original labels off and designed custom labels to replace them. To spruce up the straws she tied them with grosgrain ribbons and even sewed tiny buttons onto each one.

The Table


The breathtaking table was designed by Kristeen LaBrot. Florist Fujiko's Flowers also hand-made the doily chandelier that hung over the guest of honor’s table.

Kristeen found the rabbit glassware at Anthropologie and the napkin fabric at Jo-Ann Fabric.

Whimsical Details


Rustic and textural details like vintage glassware and wood gave the shower a whimsical feel.

With only an hour to spare on the last day of my NYC tour I managed to make one stop at my favorite east coast vintage store: Amacord. I couldn't help but reward myself with these vintage Chanel green and blue glass earrings.


Last press stop... The Cable upfronts where all cable shows are introduced. I took the stage to tell everyone about my new crafting competition show "Crafts Wars" premiering on TLC June 26th!


I'd much rather stare at these shoes than wear them. Like art but killer to a pregger!


My fellow TLC'ers Niecy Nash and Theresa Caputo from “Long Island Medium”!


Finished my trip with some amazing gourmet dim sum at The Red Farm with my friend Dana and new crafty pal Erica Domesek from PS I Made This!


Amazingly successful trip for celebraTORI and me but after four nights away I was over the moon to get home to my hubby babies and fur babies!

Yarn wrapped initials look super cute in the bathroom and help with organization. We will need to add another hook at the end soon for Tori and Dean’s little one on the way.

This is a bright and colorful children's party where I used yarn accents throughout the party on soda bottles boxes and picture frames.

Materials:
Yarn
Cardboard or purchase block letters
Pencil
Scissors
Tape or Hot Glue


How To Make Yarn-Wrapped Letters:
1. Print letters out on standard printer paper I used AR Essence font size 750. Cut out the letters.
2. Trace letter on to cardboard. Cut out each cardboard letter using a box cutter or pair of scissors.
3. Cut a small slit in the cardboard letter where you would like to begin wrapping.
4. Insert the end of yarn into the slit then tape or glue the yarn end to the back of the letter. This will help keep the yarn in place better.
5. Wrap yarn around the letter in the same direction.
6. When you reach corners start wrapping yarn in the opposite direction to cover the remainder of the letter. Hot glue tie or tape any loose ends to the back.
7. Attach letter to the wall with a command hook picture hanger or hot glue a 6" piece of yarn to the back of the letter then hang from a nail.

Ingredients

• 1 4-oz. goat cheese log softened
• 6 whole grain bread slices 
• 4 1/2 teaspoons red pepper jelly
• 3/4 cup sliced fresh strawberries 
• 6 large fresh basil leaves
• 1 1/2 cups fresh watercress or arugula
• Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

1. Spread goat cheese on 1 side of 3 bread slices.
2. Spread pepper jelly on 1 side of remaining bread slices; layer with strawberries basil leaves and watercress. 
3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Top with remaining bread goat cheese sides down.
5. Cook sandwiches in a large lightly greased nonstick skillet over medium heat 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
   
   

2. White Truffle Grilled Cheese by Karma Cucina 

Ingredients:
makes 2 sandwiches

• 6 ounces baby bella mushrooms cleaned and sliced
• 2 ounces oyster mushrooms chopped into bite size pieces
• 1 Tbsp.  butter
• 1 cup fresh coarsely shredded Fontina cheese
• 1/3 cup fresh coarsely shredded Parmesan cheese
• 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh Italian parsley
• 4 slices crusty whole grain bread
• 1 Tbsp. white truffle oil
• Sea salt

Preparation:

1. Preheat panini press.  
2. Melt butter in skillet over medium high heat.
3. Add mushrooms and saute until soft about 5 minutes.  
4. Transfer mushrooms to a medium bowl and let cool slightly about 2 minutes.  
5. Drain any accumulated juices from the bowl and discard.  
6. Use your hands to toss mushrooms with parsley Fontina and Parmesan cheese. Mixture should bind together and form a paste-like consistency.  
7. Brush one side of each slice of bread with truffle oil and sprinkle with sea salt.
8. Top dry side of two of the slices of bread with the mushroom and cheese paste.
9. Place dry side of remaining bread down upon this mixture.
10. Press sandwiches on panini grill approximately 5 minutes or until golden brown and all the cheese has melted. Serve immediately.

3. Brie Prosciutto Pear & Apricot Grilled Cheese by Rachel Voorhees  

Ingredients

• 2 Tablespoons butter
• 4 slices ciabatta bread
• 1/4 to 1/2 lb triple cream Brie
• 1 Bosc pear thinly sliced
• 4 slices prosciutto
• 2-3 Tablespoons apricot chutney 

Directions

1. Spread butter on the outside of the 4 slices of bread.
2. Spread the apricot chutney on the inside of the 4 slices of bread.
3. Spread some of the triple cream Brie over the apricot chutney on 2 slices of bread.
4. Divide the slices of pear in half and spread out over the cheese.
5. Top the pear with 2 slices of prosciutto on each sandwich followed by some of the remaining cheese so that the sandwich sticks together.
6. Place 2nd slice of bread on top of each sandwich and grill in pan over medium heat flipping once the 1st side is crispy and brown.
7. Slice in half and serve alongside mixed baby greens with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. 

4. French Onion Soup Grilled Cheese from BS’ In The Kitchen 

Ingredients:

• 1 Yellow Onion
• Pinch of Thyme
• Pinch of Flour
• Salt & Pepper
• 2-3 Ounces Concentrated Beef Stock 30 ml in an ounce
• ½-1 Ounce of Sherry
• ¾-½ cup Gruyere Cheese
• 2 Slices of French Bread
• Butter

Directions:

1. First get a pan with a tablespoon of butter in it on medium-low heat. 
2. While you’re waiting for your pan to heat up peel and evenly slice your onion putting them in the pan once sliced. 
3. Stir the onions to coat them in the butter and continue stirring only as often as needed to avoid sticking or burning. 
4. Your onions should begin to get that nice caramelized brown colour after about a half an hour. 
5. Once they have caramelized sprinkle your onion with a pinch of flour and thyme stirring to mix in. 
6. Add your sherry allowing it to reduce down and soak into the onions then add in your beef stock and salt & pepper to taste allowing to reduce as well.
7. Butter every side of your bread pile with your onions and your shredded Gruyere cheese and fry both sides in a pan on medium heat until golden brown.

I recently discovered the magic of cupcakes baked in Easter eggs and I’m mad about them! I will definitely be making a batch this weekend stay tuned for my pictures but in the meantime I thought I’d share a recipe so you can create your own this weekend as well. 

Die your eggshells however you’d like check yesterday’s post for some inspiration and then follow the steps below courtesy of The Cupcake Project:

How to Make Easter Egg Cupcakes

Ingredients 

• 9 large eggs Only one will get used in the cake. The rest are just used for the shells.
• 1/2 cup flour
• 1/4 tsp baking powder
• 1/8 tsp baking soda
• a pinch of salt
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1/4 cup unsalted butter room temperature
• 1/2 tsp lemon extract
• 1/4 cup sour cream

To prepare the cake batter:

1. Mix the flour baking powder baking soda and salt in a medium-sized bowl and set aside.
2. In a large bowl mix one egg and sugar until light and creamy.
3. Add the butter and lemon extract and mix until fully integrated.
4. Mix in the dry ingredients until just combined.
5. Add the sour cream and mix until smooth.
   
    
6. Place the prepared egg shells into a cupcake tin. Use aluminum foil to help them stand upright.
7. Load the batter into a piping bag fitted with a large round tip.  Make sure that the tip can fit all of the way inside of the egg hole.  If it can't expand the hole a little bit at a time until it fits.  Fill your eggs about 3/4 full with batter.  This is the tricky part.  If you underfill the eggs you won't have a complete cake egg inside when you crack them after baking.  If you overfill the eggs cake will overflow out of the egg during baking.
8. Bake the eggs at 350 F for 23 minutes.
9. Let cool crack and eat!

These beauties are easy to create and always yield unique results. I found a great tutorial on The Magic Onions blog that takes you through step by step. 

1. Cut your silk neck ties in pieces that are big enough to cover an egg. 
2. Blow the yolks out of the eggs using this method. 
3. Wrap your clean eggs in the scraps of silk and secure with a rubber band: 
   
    
4. Wrap the eggs again this time in an old stocking 
   
    
5. Put a few golf balls into the stockings too to weigh down the eggs when they are in the water.
   
    
6. Place your eggs and golf balls into a pot of boiling water with 2 tablespoons of vinegar added and let them simmer for 20 minutes. Allow them to cool and unwrap... you will be amazed at the pretty designs that have been transferred onto your eggs! 

Leaf Print Easter Eggs 

I came across this Disney Family Fun tutorial and was mad about the color and print! The process is also pretty simple:

1. Lay a leaf on an egg then cover it with a section of nylon stocking to hold it in place. 
   
    
2. Pull together both open ends of the stocking then twist the ends together and secure them with a rubber band. 
   
    
3. For each dye bath mix 1/2 cup warm water 1 teaspoon vinegar and 10 to 20 drops of food coloring in a glass. Carefully submerge the nylon-wrapped egg in the bath and let it soak for about 4 minutes.
   
    
4. Use a spoon to remove the egg from the dye bath and set it on a covered work surface. Carefully remove the rubber band nylon and leaf. Allow the egg to dry completely before further handling it.
   
    

Colorful Chinese Tea Eggs 

Who says you have to limit your dying to egg shells? This twist on traditional Chinese tea eggs creates vibrant and colorful hard-boiled eggs for your Easter festivities. 

Here’s how to do it:

1. Boil your eggs normally 
2. When they’re cool enough to handle roll the eggs around on a hard surface so they crack. The shell needs to stay on the egg so you don’t want to crack them too hard- just enough to get that overall cracked look. 
3. Boil your eggs again this time in water colored with gel food coloring.

This morning I walked into the kids’ room and I heard Liam and Stella talking to each other. Liam said to Stella "you're a Jewish" and Stella said "No Liam you're a Jewish.” I walked in and said “technically you are both Jewish.”

They both asked why and I said "because I'm Jewish" to which Stella replied "you're not Jewish you are just a mom.” I then asked them without having a completely proper answer prepared if they knew what being Jewish meant. They both said No. 

At what age is it appropriate to start talking to your kids about religion and heritage? And what if you and your husband have different religious backgrounds? I know we weren't prepared to have this conversation yet and still completely aren't. Luckily for the time being they were distracted when they heard Dean call "breakfast is ready” from the kitchen.

What do you love best about your job?

My job is about creating building a brand meeting & collaborating with amazing other entrepreneurs and of course… being able to do ALL of this as a full time MOM.  I would have to say that in this job I absolutely love hearing how our steppers are received and that mom moms-to-be and/or tots themselves just loved what we created and made for them … Kt Steppers is truly my third baby so hearing that is the same satisfaction I get from seeing my boys smile at me and say ‘I love You Mommy.’

What are the biggest challenges you face as a mompreneur?

I believe everyone can agree T-I-M-E!   There never seems to be enough hours in a day. My day usually begins before 6am too. I have 3 full days a week to myself to get work done while both my boys are in school so you would think this would be adequate and it's more than I had even last year but I have a tendency to just add more to my plate… just a little each day/week it’s a problem I have.

As a mompreneur how do you approach risk taking? And how does being a mom factor into your decisions?

If you’re ‘in it to win it’ you definitely need to take risks or keep your biz a hobby.  My approach after being in sales for years is don’t be afraid to hear the word ‘NO’.  For every 10 ‘No’s’ there is a ‘Yes’.  So send that email message or make that phone call the worst outcome is ‘No’. 

Because I’m also a mom I do factor in what the risk is... am I pursuing an event that will take me away from my MOM duties? Will fulfilling this order keep me from seeing my son’s game or play? I definitely calculate when/where/why to take that risk. If it will be a huge return for not only me but my family then there is no question on taking that leap and going for it!

Is the professional personal? Do you find that you sometimes need to create boundaries between home life and work life?

Yes the professional is personal for me. I run a business that is geared to MOMs supplying a product for kids. I am my brand ‘Kt’ so it is 100 personal.

Don’t confuse the personal for unprofessional though. You also have to draw boundaries especially with how you/your business is perceived. I do believe there is a line that can be crossed in today’s social media age. I want to be personal and show that I am human connect on that level of being a mom to my audience but I’m also promoting my brand.

What’s coming up for KT Steppers? 

Right now this month we have some exciting news… we were a finalist in the 2012 Cribsie Awards – Cutest StepStools for Tots in Climbing Mode. We are up against some ‘bigger’ brands and the voting ended last week.  We couldn’t be more thrilled and honored about this nomination and look forward to hearing the winner announced on April 2nd.

More exciting news is that we are looking to launch our ‘Initial Series’ Steppers shortly.  They will be a great addition to our eco-friendly product line with standard designs and just an ‘initial’ to personalize for quick ship. 

One more exciting tidbit… I will be featured in a book!!! I can’t divulge too much information but after speaking at a fabulous entrepreneur focused conference last year the organizers have asked to include some of my advice for the book for all to see and read pretty exciting. Will definitely keep everyone posted.


What are your top mommy must-haves for busy moms on the go?

1. Not until last year did I own a ‘Smartphone’ and my goodness is it smart! I don’t really know how I functioned without it… it helps run my biz when I’m not at home HQ and also is a meltdown stopper for the kids Angry Birds is a fave app. 

2. The Crockpot for sure! After a busy day out and about or just working at home to know that dinner will be done and ready with little or no effort is a lifesaver!

3. Having an organized ‘home-based’ calendar. My husband travels often for work so knowing his schedule the kids’ activities and my meetings all in one place is how we function and know where everyone is!

4. Lastly I would have to say… having a supportive partner. If it wasn’t for my husband we wouldn’t be as successful as we’ve become. He truly is my 1 fan and supporter! 

What is one piece of advice you'd give to an aspiring mompreneur? 

Don’t give up!  You may have started your business with only one goal in mind but if that is not working don’t throw it to the curb tweak it!  See what is working and build on that. Don’t be afraid to scale your business. Just because you started one way doesn’t mean it will succeed that way. Oh yeah breathe and enjoy the ride!

When it comes to the bedroom I say the more the merrier… No this is not taking a turn for the obscene; I’m talking piling the whole family- chickens included- into the bed. 

I’ve already shared my love of TV time in the bedroom but now Dean and I are onto another debate: whether or not kids and furry family members in the bed create a boundary between us. 

Not surprisingly I love having the kids in our bed to cuddle and I think the bigger the bed the better! Dean on the other hand wants to up the romance and downsize us to a queen bed! He even put down blue tape on our current bed to show me the size of a queen vs. king. In his defense we actually did have a queen bed in the beginning honeymoon phase of our relationship so I can see why he’d associate that with romance. But now that we have three kids jumping in and out of our sheets that would never work! 

Right now our usual routine is to let the kids fall asleep in our bed and then move them to their own rooms. So here’s my question for you: do you ever let your kids sleep in your bed? What are your bedroom boundaries? And does a smaller bed equal more hanky panky?

I can't believe it's been five years since I welcomed my first baby Liam Aaron McDermott into this world. It was one of the most amazing days of my life and not a day has gone by since that I'm not more amazed by and more in love with Liam.

He is such a special little man. I love you with all my heart forever Monkey! I hope you never stop wanting to kiss hug and love on your mama. You bring such happiness into all our lives with your loving nature funny remarks and old soul sensibility.

Here we are checking in and Liam is all ready to hit the slopes.


Upon checking in we took the Funicular a glass box with seats that takes you up on a track like a tram- very fun like a mini ride to the hotel which is high atop the mountain.

Only my kids would want to go to the pool when it's freezing out… or so I thought. There were actually lots of families at the pool. I put on a brave face and it was actually amazing- they brought us hot chocolates.

Ingredients 

Serves 4 to 6

• 3 pomegranates juiced or 3/4 cup unsweetened pomegranate juice 
• ½ cup rice flour 
• 4 cups milk 
• ½ cup 2 tbsps sugar 
• ½ tsp vanilla extract 
• 1 ½ tbsps rosewater 
• ½ tsp salt 
• 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses optional 

Directions

1. Place a medium-sized bowl over a pot of simmering water not touching the water and at a medium heat or use a double-boiler for this recipe. 
2. In a small bowl add the rice flour to the pomegranate juice in increments whisking until thoroughly combined. You don’t want any lumps. 
3. Heat the milk in the top of the double boiler. You should see bubbles around the edges but the milk shouldn’t be boiling. Add pomegranate juice with rice flour sugar vanilla extract rosewater salt and pomegranate molasses if using. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes until thickened. 
4. Again there shouldn’t be any lumps so blend with a hand blender if you happen to have a few. Ladle into serving cups or one large bowl and chill in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 hours. 
5. Serve garnished with pomegranate arils. 
6. For the recipe I seeded messily… 3 pomegranates blended the arils and strained out the juice. You can more easily do this in a juicer if you have one. If using bottled pomegranate juice it’s definitely more concentrated than juicing the fruit so I wouldn’t add the optional pomegranate molasses. Also be careful of the sweetness if the pomegranate juice has added sugars… 

2. Southern Banana Pudding from A Sweet Spoonful

Ingredients:

6 servings 

• 1 cup sugar
• 1/4 cup 1 tsp flour
• 3 cups whole milk
• 3 egg yolks
• 1 tsp. vanilla
• 6 oz. vanilla wafers about half of a box
• 3 bananas
• 3/4 cup whipping cream or more if you’d like!
• 1/8 cup powdered sugar
• few dashes salt 

Preparation:

1. Whisk milk and egg yolks in a bowl and pour into a heavy saucepan. 
2. Add sugar flour and salt and whisk together until smooth. 
3. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly 20 minutes or until thickened. If it’s not getting as thick as you’d like after 20 minutes feel free to add another teaspoon of flour. 
4. Remove from heat; stir in the vanilla.
5. Arrange one-third of vanilla wafers in bottom of a small serving dish. 
6. Slice 1 banana and layer over wafers. 
7. Spoon one-third of custard over bananas. Repeat until custard is gone and you have a few solid layers.
8. Beat whipping cream at medium speed with an electric mixer until foamy; gradually add powdered sugar to mixture beating until soft peaks form. Spread over custard. 
9. Serve immediately or cover and chill for eight hours. 

3. Nutella Rice Pudding by Baking Bites

Ingredients

Makes 4 servings.

• 1 cups leftover cooked rice
• 1 cup milk low fat is fine
• 1 cup half and half
• 1/3 cup sugar
• 1/8 tsp salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 2 tsp cocoa powder
• 3 tbsp Nutella

Directions 

1. Combine cooked rice milk half and half use 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup cream if you do not have half and half sugar and salt in a medium saucepan. 
2. Bring to a simmer then lower the heat so the mixture doesn’t boil. Stir regularly with a spatula scraping the bottom of the pan until just about all of the milk is absorbed about 45 minutes and pudding has thickened. 
3. Add the vanilla and sift the cocoa powder and stir to combine. Remove from heat and stir in Nutella.
4. Divide pudding into 4 small serving dishes cover and cool to room temperature. Chill for at least 1 hour or longer before serving.
5. Garnish with whipped cream – plain lightly sweetened or Nutella-flavored see recipe below.

Nutella Whipped Cream

Ingredients 

• 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream chilled
• 1 tbsp Nutella
• 1 tsp hot water or coffee

Directions

1. Whip heavy cream to soft peaks in a small bowl.
2. In another small bowl place remaining tablespoon of Nutella. 
3. Add 1 tsp of the hot water or coffee to the Nutella. Whisk together until Nutella has dissolved. 
4. Fold Nutella mixture into the whipped cream and spoon it on top of puddings.

4. S’mores Pudding from Annie’s Eats:

Ingredients:

Serves 6

For the graham cracker layer:

• 4½ whole graham crackers 5 x 2½ inch rectangles coarsely crumbled
• 2 tbsp. unsalted butter melted
• 1 tbsp. sugar
• Dash of ground cinnamon

For the chocolate pudding:

• 1 cup sugar
• 3 tbsp. cornstarch
• 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1 tsp. espresso powder optional
• Pinch of salt
• 3 large egg yolks
• 2 cups whole milk
• ½ cup heavy cream
• 8 oz. bittersweet chocolate finely chopped
• 1 tbsp. whiskey optional
• 1 tbsp. unsalted butter
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract

For the marshmallow topping:

• 2 large egg whites
• 1 cup sugar
• ¼ cup water
• 2 tbsp. light corn syrup
• 1¼ tsp. vanilla extract

Preparation: 

1. Preheat the oven to 300 F.  
2. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. 
3. To make the graham cracker layer combine the crumbled graham crackers butter sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.  Toss with a fork to blend.  
4. Spread the mixture in an even layer on the prepared baking sheet.  Bake until crisp stirring once during baking about 10 minutes.
5. To make the pudding combine the sugar cornstarch cocoa powder espresso powder and salt in a medium saucepan.  
6. Add the egg yolks and whisk to blend.  Gradually whisk in the milk and the cream. 
7. Cook over medium heat whisking constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.  Allow to boil for 30 seconds.  
8. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate whiskey butter and vanilla; whisk until the chocolate and butter are completely melted and the mixture is smooth. 
9. Let the pudding cool slightly stirring occasionally about 10 minutes.
10. Spoon 1/3 cup of the pudding into each of 6 serving dishes. 
11. Sprinkle each with some of the graham cracker mixture dividing evenly between the dishes.  
12. Top each with 1/3 cup more of the pudding mixture.  Cover each with plastic wrap directly on the surface of the pudding.  Chill for at least two hours.
13. To make the marshmallow mixture combine all ingredients in the bowl of an electric mixer.  
14. Set the bowl over a pan of simmering water and heat whisking frequently until an instant-read thermometer registers 160 F.  
15. Return the bowl to the mixer fitting with the whisk attachment and whip on high speed until the marshmallow mixture forms stiff peaks.  
16. Spoon or pipe the marshmallow mixture over the top of the chilled puddings.  
17. Use a kitchen torch to lightly brown the marshmallow topping.  
18. Garnish with additional crumbled graham crackers if desired.

5. Pudding Shots by DaniHig- a fun one for the adults!

Ingredients

• 1 cup milk
• 1/2 cup Irish cream liqueur eg. Bailey's®
• 1/2 cup vodka eg. Smirnoff®
• 1 4 serving size package instant chocolate pudding mix

Directions

1. Whisk together the milk Irish cream liqueur vodka and instant pudding mix in a bowl until combined. Continue whisking for 2 minutes. 
2. Spoon the pudding mixture into shot glasses or disposable 'party shot' cups. Chill until set about 30 minutes. The shots will have the consistency of mousse. 

Savory Puddings:

1. Creamy Corn Pudding by Sweet Pea’s Kitchen

Ingredients:

Yields: 6 servings

• 6 medium ears corn husks and silk removed
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter plus extra for greasing baking dish
• 2/3 cup heavy cream
• 1 1/2 teaspoons table salt
• 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
• 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
• 1 1/3 cups whole milk
• 4 large eggs beaten lightly
• 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Directions

1. Using chef’s knife or corn stripper cut kernels from 5 ears of corn into a medium bowl; Being careful to remove only the part of the corn kernel sticking out of the cob; cutting deeper will pull off fibrous material. Hold the stripped cobs over the bowl and using back of butter knife firmly scrape any remaining pulp on cobs into bowl. You should have about 2½ cups kernels and milk. Grate remaining ear corn on coarse side of box grater you should have about ½ cup grated kernels. Add grated kernels to bowl with cut kernels.
2. Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position place roasting pan or large baking dish on rack and heat oven to 350 degrees. Generously butter 8-inch square baking dish. Bring 2 quarts water to boil in kettle or saucepan.
3. Heat large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat until hot about 2 minutes. Add butter; when foaming subsides add corn mixture. Cook stirring occasionally until liquid has almost evaporated about 5 minutes. Add cream salt sugar and cayenne; cook stirring occasionally until thickened about 5 minutes. Transfer corn mixture to medium bowl. Stir in milk then whisk in eggs and cornstarch. Pour mixture into prepared baking dish.
4. Set dish in roasting pan or large baking dish on oven rack; fill outer pan with boiling water to reach halfway up inner pan. Bake until center jiggles slightly when shaken and pudding has browned lightly in spots 20 to 25 minutes. Remove baking dish with corn pudding from water bath; cool 10 minutes and serve.

2. Steak and Kidney Pudding by Nigella

Nigella’s Note: I often double the quantities for the meat filling then freeze half so I'm only a defrost away from another pudding. I always cook the meat filling a day or two in advance: the flavours deepen wonderfully and the whole thing seems less of a performance.

Ingredients

Serves: 6 generously 
For the filling:

• 2 tablespoons flour 
• 1/2 teaspoon English mustard powder
• 500g stewing steak cut into 2cm pieces 
• 250g lambs' kidney cut into chunks
• 25g butter 
• 2 tablespoons olive oil 
• 1 medium onion chopped 
• 150g flat mushrooms i.e. 2 medium sized peeled and roughly chunked 
• 150ml beef stock
• 150ml stout 
• 1 scant tablespoon oyster sauce

For the suet crust:

• 350g self-raising flour 
• 1/2 teaspoon salt 
• 175g suet 
• 1/2 teaspoon English mustard powder 
• 3-litre plastic pudding basin with lid both well buttered

Instructions

1. The 2 hours of steaming - which involves little activity on your part - seems less of a consideration when separated from the pudding's preparation. So preheat the oven to 140ºC/gas mark 1 season the 2 tablespoons of flour with salt pepper and the mustard powder and put it into a plastic bag along with the steak and kidney. Seal it and toss everything about to get an even coating of flour. 
2. Warm the butter and oil in a casserole and brown the meat including the kidney in batches removing each to a dish. Fry the onion in the pan then add the mushrooms and fry them briefly adding more oil if you need it. Put all the meat back into the casserole and over a medium heat add the stock stout and oyster sauce. Bring it to the boil scraping any floury bits off the bottom. Cover with a lid and cook in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 hours. When it's cooked check the seasoning and put aside to cool. 
3. About 2 1/2 - 3 hours before you want to eat fill a large saucepan with water and bring to the boil. When it begins to boil start making the pastry and not before. Mix the flour salt suet and mustard powder in a large bowl; then stirring with a wooden spoon add enough cold water to make a firm dough. 
4. Roll out on a floured surface into a large circle approximately 5mm thick and cut away a quarter segment from the circle to use later as the lid. Ease the three-quarter circle of pastry into your buttered pudding basin; there should be about 3cm of overhang. Spoon the cold filling in not letting it come up higher than about 2cm below the rim. Roll out the quarter segment into a small circle to fit the top and seal it with the overhanging edges. Clip on the basin's buttered lid immerse it in water or place it in a steamer over water and leave it there for 2 hours remembering to check water levels occasionally. 
5. Turn the pudding out onto a plate with a good lip or some sort of shallow bowl: there is a wonderful moment when like a bulldozed building your pudding begins to crack and crumple and then cascades downwards; you need to make sure every thick oozy bit of stout beefy liquid is safely contained.

3. Savory Spinach and Artichoke Bread Pudding from the Food Network

Ingredients

Serves 10 to 12

• 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 
• 2 1/2 pounds spinach washed 3 cups cooked and roughly chopped 
• 2 cups chopped yellow onions 
• 1 tablespoon roughly chopped garlic 
• 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning 
• 2 1/2 teaspoons salt 
• 1 1/4 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 
• 3 8 1/2-ounce cans quartered artichoke hearts tough outer leaves removed 
• 6 large eggs 
• 3 cups heavy cream 
• 2 cups milk 
• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 
• 12 to 14 cups cubed 1-inch day-old French bread about 1 loaf 
• 1 pound Brie rind removed and cut into 1/2-inch cubes optional 
• 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan 
• 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley leaves

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 by 13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon olive oil. 
2. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Add the spinach and cook until just wilted about 30 seconds. Drain and rinse with cold water. Once cool squeeze as much water from spinach as possible then roughly chop and reserve. 
3. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook until golden brown and tender about 5 minutes. Add the garlic 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper and cook stirring until the garlic is fragrant about 30 seconds. Add the artichokes and cook stirring another 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and reserve. 
4. Combine the eggs cream milk lemon juice remaining 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning remaining 2 teaspoons salt and remaining 1 teaspoon pepper in a large bowl. Whisk to combine. Add the bread spinach artichoke mixture brie 1/4 cup Parmesan and parsley and stir to combine. If bread does not absorb all of liquid immediately then let rest until this happens about 20 minutes. 
5. Pour the bread pudding mixture into the prepared dish. Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan over the top and drizzle with remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil. Bake until firm in the center and golden brown about 1 hour. Serve warm.

Mamas I want your take on something. Dean and I have been going back and forth on whether or not we should go on a vacation alone- he wants to and I refuse to go on any trips without the kids. I’m wondering do you always bring the family or do you ever go on vacations without the kids?

Our conversation made me reflect back to a trip I took to Europe years ago. It seemed like Europeans did everything with their kids and their children were also much more cultured than American children. Unlike American kids they really engaged in conversations with adults and had no need for game boys or ipads. In Sardinia I saw two kids playing chess on the beach next to their parents who were reading! 


European kids are treated more like little adults: no kids’ menus no kids’ pools. It makes me wonder why do we as Americans seem to create a separate culture for our kids? Have we made our vacations family-friendly at the cost of being relaxing for the adults? 

It seems like Europeans bring their kids everywhere so effortlessly. Is there a way to blend a family vacation while still feeling like you’ve had your adult time?

I usually promise Stella and Liam that they’ll get a toy when we’re out shopping and most of the time that toy is a vintage lunchbox. So far our growing collection includes Care Bears The Incredible Hulk and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The kids love them and I’m a fan of anything nostalgic and unique.

Earlier this year Dean and I decided we’d like to have our own Shabbat dinner with the kids and close friends and it turned out to be a huge success. Even though this is historically a religious tradition it’s easy to reinvent and adapt to fit any family. 



The process of preparing the food as a family sitting down to eat together and Dean reading a blessing was really special. It’s nice to have a weekly time and tradition to gather your loved ones and slow down for a moment. 


The kids also loved it. Liam was so excited about it he said “I love this! Can we do Shabbat dinner every Friday Saturday Sunday and Monday?”

When the show started I was beyond happy about Billy Crystal's return as host. Whenever I thought of The Oscars I thought of Billy Crystal and his fun song and dance. Past years just hadn't been the same. Watching his triumphant return song I thought back to Madge at the Superbowl. She had been out of the spotlight for a while and watching her I had been a little sad that she didn't perform as well as she used to granted for 50 she looked amazing!. Billy however was as classy talented and charming as ever. 

I was thrilled when Octavia Spencer won for best supporting actress. She was so amazing in The Help and has really paid her dues in this industry. I kept thinking "I feel like I've worked with her.” Well through the magic of IMDB I discovered we had worked together in a 2003 independent movie called Sol Goode. Well she sure has come a long way! She looked gorgeous and my waterworks started as soon as she spoke. Just wish she had had a bit more time to say everything she wanted. I hate when they tell them I wrap it up. It's their big moment they should be allowed to bask in it!

Next Christopher Plummer won best supporting actor. I adored his performance in Beginners. I also loved that he's the oldest Oscar winner ever. I'm sure he never thought at 82 he'd be taking home an Oscar. Goes to show it ain't over till it’s over and that the end is just the beginning. And personally I'd give him best dressed! He looked elegant chic and hip in his velvet tux.

I loved Emma Stone's bit onstage presenting with Ben Stiller. She might be young but she commanded everyone's attention with her perfectly timed and delivered comedic bit. I think she's an upcoming major force to be reckoned with in Hollywood.

Loved Midnight in Paris but was secretly rooting for Kristin Wiig to win for best original screenplay. She's an amazing talent and a damn funny writer. I love seeing women writing their own comedic vehicles and then taking the box office by storm which is exactly what she did!

When time came for Best Actress I had my theory. In the past I've said that actresses always just miss the mark fashion wise when they win an Oscar. Michelle Williams knocked it out of the park with her gown which is how I knew she wouldn't win. My theory was never wrong until this year. I had thought that Meryl would win but when I saw her success with her gold lame gown and Viola Davis' miss with her green gown I changed my mind. But Meryl Streep is unstoppable. She broke the streak and looked amazing as she accepted so graciously her third Oscar. For generations past current and ones to come I doubt there will ever be anyone who can hold a candle to Meryl Streep's acting. She is one-of-a-kind and as she said naysayers can say "oh her again"… but who cares. Yes her again again and again because no one can become a role so entirely as Meryl Streep. I bow to her greatness.

Everyone was arguing amongst the Gods... would it be George Clooney or Brad Pitt? Well they didn't have to worry about their friendship staying in tact because they both lost to French actor Jean Dujardin from The Artist. You know you are amazing when you win for a silent movie! Actually he said two words in the film. What a credit to his performance!

And last but not least was Best Picture which at this point was no surprise that it went to The Artist. There's always a film that does some heavy duty sweeping at The Oscars. This year was no exception. Although I would have shouted with glee if The Help won I was happy The Artist won. I loved it! What an amazing throwback of a film to an era I’d love to have been a part of. And to think Harvey Weinstein has said that people thought he was crazy for making this film.

And just like that another Oscar year had passed. It was a nice night for all and at least this time I didn't puke on my best friend!

Great Gatsby lovers get excited- the roaring 20’s are back in a big way. Twenties inspired looks were all over the runway with designers like Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch paying major homage to the one and only Daisy Buchanan. 

This is a trend I love and hold near and dear- The Great Gatsby with Mia Farrow and Robert Redford spoke to me so much stylistically that my first wedding was Gatsby inspired. 4 Learn facts about heart health: Recent figures from the American Heart Association estimate ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Knowing your blood pressure among other important numbers is one way to help stay informed about your heart health.

5 Make time for family fun:  Set-up a “family night” each week. Cook a healthy dinner together break out the board games or head outside to enjoy a nice walk. Sharing in laughter and fun helps relieve stress which is great for your heart!

I recently tried Jamie Oliver’s Lancashire Hotpot recipe and it was so delicious that I wanted to share it with all of you foodistas! 

Lancashire Hotpot is a traditional British dish that was originally developed as a means of cheaply refueling miners millworkers and families in the northwest of England during the Industrial Revolution. 

Today this is a pub classic that’s perfect to serve on a cold winter night… not that we have many of those in LA but I like to take advantage when we do!  

The lamb in this recipe can also be substituted for beef depending on your preference. So without further ado here is Jamie Oliver’s Lancashire Hotpot recipe: 

Lancashire Hotpot

Ingredients 
2 tbsp olive oil 
500 ml hot lamb stock 16.9 oz or 2.1 cups 
3 tbsp flour 
White pepper 
800g lamb diced 27 oz or 3.4 cups; can substitute beef 
2 carrots sliced 
2 onions sliced 
1 small swede cut into chunks can substitute turnip
1 bay leaf 
½ small bunch of thyme leaves picked 
Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp unsalted butter 
450 g white potatoes cut lengthways into 5mm slices 2 cups 

Instructions 

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 
2. Put the oil in a large pan over a medium-high heat. 
3. Meanwhile gently warm the stock in a small saucepan. 
4. Put the flour in a large bowl and season with a little bit of sea salt and a generous amount of white pepper. 
5. Toss the diced lamb or mutton in the seasoned flour till evenly coated; reserve the excess flour for later. 
6. Brown the meat in a large heated pan for 2-3 minutes in batches if necessary then remove to a plate and set aside.  
7. Reduce the heat slightly and add the onion carrot swede bay leaf and half the thyme leaves. 
8. Cook for 5-10 minutes or until the vegetables start to brown. 
9. Add the reserved flour and stir well. 
10. Stir in the hot stock and a few good splashes of Worcestershire sauce. 
11. Bring to boil then turn off the heat and add the meat. 
12. Transfer the stew to a shallow casserole dish about 30cm x 22cm 16in x 12in. 
     
13. Melt the butter in a small saucepan. 
14. Arrange the potato slices over the stew in one layer but slightly overlapping. 
     
15. Brush the top with a little butter and sprinkle with some salt pepper and a scattering of the remaining thyme. 
16. Cover with a lid or foil and cook in the oven for 1.5 hours or until the potatoes are cooked through. 
17. Remove the lid for the last 30 minutes of cooking and brush with a little more butter so the top browns nicely. 
18. Serve with steamed greens and a beer.

In honor of Valentine’s Day I decided to give away two Snake Chain Necklaces from my HSN collection. I had a great time reading through all of your heartfelt and hilarious Valentine’s Day stories. Here’s what our two lucky winners had to say about their best and worst Valentine’s Days:

M Claw- I was never a big V-day girl but the best Valentine's Day turned out to be during my last year of college.  I had been on one date with this guy who I knew was special.  He played college basketball so the next day he left for a couple days of away games only to return on Valentine's Day.  We didn't get in touch this was in the 90's..no cell phones for us while he was gone but I was thinking a lot about him.  That night I went to a intramurial basketball game with my roommates and turns out he was coaching the team!  Afterwards I walked onto the court to flirt.  He throws me the ball and says "make this shot and I'll take you out tonight" he was so cocky.  So I throw it from the 3-point line and sink it FULL NET!!! 

We went out and had a great night and never looked back.  15 years and 5 kids and one basketball hoop later we're still in love!!!

Morgan Peters- Ooooooh this topic triggers a trip down memory lane. I suppose you could say I got my worst Valentines Day outta the way when I was in middle school. Let's FACE it pun intended I had REALLY bad acne as a young gal going thru puberty. My brother used to call me Pizza Face and I had a healthy fear of putting on a tank or swimsuit due to my backne. One rare day confidence overcame my young soul and I asked out a cute popular boy admittedly "out of my league" who actually said yes! We were together for 6 days until I opened my Valentines Day present from my "boyfriend" and it was a variety of acne products- noxema oxy pads clean & clear!! OMG! I was devestated. Obviously our 6th grade relationship was a joke! WORST VALENTINES DAY EVER. Update: 15 years later my skin is healthy and beautiful and I have a wonderful man in my life vs. the 6th grade boyfriend who is currently my hometown bar fighting champion 

Congratulations M Claw and Morgan! I can’t wait to see pictures of you rocking your new necklace! 

And I enjoyed all of your stories so much that I thought I’d share some of my other favorites:

The Good:

Brooke Brittell - The best valentines day I ever had was during the 2007 V-day Blizzard. To tell the truth I am not one for winter but I live in VT and winter is just a part of life. Well on this particular V-day we ended up getting 7 feet of snow when all was said and done. The plans I had originally were to get dressed up and go out to eat with all of my "single" friends at our local pub just imagine 34 of us taking over the joint looking our best and this pub was small but the blizzard cancelled all of that.

So instead since it was a college town and most of us lived near each other we decided to get decked out in our winter gear; pack a few backpacks full of wine champagne and beer plus munchies; we grabbed our shovels and brooms and set off on the 1/2 mile trek to our friends house to have our gathering of "single" gals and boys. We had so much fun digging our way out of our places making snow forts all the while drinking and munching on good food! It was truely a fabulous V-day with amazing friends celebrating how much we loved each other. 

Ashley Forestieri- As a young girl my Mother always tried to make smaller holidays special. It would not seem like much at the time but red velvet cupcakes with sprinkles wrapped in the little heart papers special plates and napkins bought just for the occasion a small box of chocolate or a small little gift it’s the small things that your heart misses the most when you realize they are not there. The best and the worst Valentine’s Day would perhaps be wrapped into one year. I was away from home at college these little gifts of love from my Mom and Dad and was newly single from a guy I really liked. I watched the flowers pour into the college dorm and girls all dressed to go out on their dates missing what was while trying to feel lucky to be going to a date party with a friend. No expectations just fun meeting new people right?  As I held my card from my sweet parents I headed out with these new friends missing wondering where I was headed. Little did I know that the man I would marry had spotted a girl in a red dress in the crowd. Without a word the evening went on as planned but the stage was set and a few days later I heard of this guy at the party whom had mentioned me and our story began in the months that followed. The early days were filled with flowers gifts fun and manners the stuff Valentine’s Day is made of only it was just a Thursday in the fall. I was given his best manners of a gentleman and he became my best friend. Many years later I realize that some gifts are not recognized in the moment but rather come with time. Life happens it’s ups and downs the simple things like special plates and napkins the effort shown to show someone you care is what matters.  This year our young daughter has a special surprise date with this mystery man from the party. They will go out to dinner for the night while I spend time with our three gentlemen-in-training for a special dinner of our own. It seems not matter what the day it may be a good one after all. 

Kelly Canseco- One Valentines day before my husband and I had kids and Valentines day was a little more romantic for us I had a high stress job and had to work late. We had planned on going out to dinner but obviously had missed our reservation because of my job. When I pulled into the driveway the houselooked dark. When I walked in my husband had turned our dining room into the most romantic room I could imagine. There were candles lit everywhere & rose petals thrown all over. He also had prepared a very impressive dinner complete with dessert. We ate by candle light with "our songs" playing in the background. It was so romantic and made me fall in love with my husband all over again. A Valentines day i will never forget! 

Katy Collins- I have to say my best one EVER was when I was 7 months pregnant with my first son. My husband at the time bf took us to the beach because he was coaching a basketball tournament. He and I ate dinner at this little beach side restaurant...I think burgers and fries? He asked if I wanted to go take a walk on the beach..I was responded with "uhhhhh not really.." haha remember..I was 7 months preggers...it was freezing and it was like 8 at night! I saw the look on his face and I quickly changed my mind. He grabbed my hand and we headed down to the water. He told me that since tomorrow was Valentines day..and because of the tournament he was going to give me my Valentine now. He pulled out his cell phone..and a piece of paper. He began to read a poem about us by the light of his phone. It was the most romantic thing I had ever heard. He ended the poem with.." I thought I would end this with something clever..I want to be with you now and forever.." He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! After I regained my ability to speak..I said "YES!" We were married that following that Oct! = Have to say..best Valentines EVER!

Shannon Merchant- One of my best Valentine's memories is from my son Noah.  My little man!  He was only about 3 years old and was learning how to count.  He was going to preschool and he made a card for me for Valentine's Day.  It said "I love you 10!" because that was as high as he could count.  From that day on he would always say "I love you" followed by the highest number he knew!  He's now 5 and it has changed to "I love you 100!"

The Bad:

Marci Day- My first valentines day with my husband then boyfriend he said he couldn't decide whether to get me chocolate or flowers so he got me a chocolate rose. That's. it.  He's gotten to be a MUCH better gift giver since then.

Char- My worst Valentine's memory was when I was 16.  I made the guy I was dating a memory box filled with all of his favorite candy and things we did together.  He bought me a fabric heart shaped box that should have been filled with chocolates however he replaced the chocolates with rocks! Needless to say we didnt date much longer after that...hahaha.

nora from south- My worst Valentine’s Day present was from my hubby a few years back. At that time we had been married for about 3 years and he was just learning how to be the world’s best husband lol!  Before Valentine’s Day he was really secretive and was dropping hints on what a huge surprise he is working on that I had never even thought about getting a gift like that that it is all custom made and on and on and on… I was all giddy inside when Valentine ’s Day finally arrived. I was hoping to get cute diamond studs or necklace or charm bracelet but I was feeling deep disappointment when my hubby gave me a big box. Please not a waffle maker I thought. I opened the box and there was this silver briefcase looking thing. I was pretty sure I was not getting my diamond studs that year :. When I opened the briefcase I knew that was my worst Valentine’s Day present ok worst present EVER. My husband had ordered custom made casino quality clay poker chips!!! WHAT A HECK! His reasoning behind the gift: I had enjoyed playing poker with his parents so much that he was hoping it would become my new thing.

From Me- My worst Valentine's Day has to be when I was eighteen. I had been dating "Ben" for five weeks and was estatic to have a  boyfriend on Valentine's Day; he was my first Valentine and so I went all out...reservations at a nice rstuarant four different cards candy....I dressed up and couldn't wait for Ben to show up.

When he finally showed up forty minutes late he wasn't even dressed up. Did I mention I had bought a new dress and shoes for the occasion? Had my hair done? But then all was forgiven! I saw a square package tucked under his arm. It was beautifully wrapped by his sister I found out later and my heart began to pound!

'Whatcould it be?' I wondered excitedly. So he was dressed like a slob and didn't bother to get me a card. Who cared that he had been so late we lost our reservation...he chose a gift FOR ME!

Then he sat down and told me I could open it...I took off the paper and ribbon tenderly as I wanted to remember this day forever! Then it was open and I saw the 'gift.' HIS parent's bathroom scale! I was flabbergasted! What kind of gift is that to show love? I was mortified.

Needless to say we broke up that night! Great Valentine's Day right? I can laugh about it now but what a horrible first Valentine's Day...EVER!

Alyssa Maldonado- My worst Valentine's day was also my best. I was 20 and I had been going out with my then boyfriend for 2 years. Everything was going great until on Valentine's day he broke up with. I was heart broken. I was so depressed and in the worst possible mood. When I got home from being dumped in my room I found a box of Godiva chocolates and a bouquet of flowers. By the chocolates and flowers there was a card from my dad. It said that he was proud to have me as his Valentine and that I would always be his little girl. This gesture from my dad made everything seem not that important! To this day my dad is always my favorite and my very first Valentine :

• ½ cup of butter softened
• 1 ½ cups sugar
• 2 eggs
• 2 ½ tablespoons cocoa powder
• 2 ounces red food coloring
• 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1 cup buttermilk
• 2 ounces water
• 1 teaspoon white vinegar
• 1 teaspoon baking soda

INGREDIENTS FOR CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:

• 1 8 oz. package cream cheese
• ½ cup unsalted butter
• 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

MAKE CUPCAKES:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Grease cupcake pan or line with paper liners
3. Cream softened butter & sugar together until fluffy
4. Add eggs and blend well
5. In a separate bowl combine cocoa & food coloring & stir
6. Sift flour and salt together into mixture
7. Add vanilla buttermilk and water to mixture
8. In another bowl combine vinegar and baking soda. Then fold into cupcake mixture.
9. Pour or spoon mixture into cupcake cups
10. Bake 15 to 20 mins or until a wood toothpick inserted into the middle of the cupcake comes out clean
11. Let cool for about 10 mins. Then put on rack or plate and let finish cooling.

MAKE FROSTING

1. Blend together softened cream cheese and softened butter
2. Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract
3. Blend until smooth
4. Frost cupcakes and enjoy!

And if you’re single and feeling blue about being alone this Valentine’s Day I have something just for you: the blue velvet cupcake. 


To make these follow my red velvet recipe above but substitute blue food coloring for red.  This fun pop of color would also be a hit with the kids!

I just felt like a small breakfast...


And this masterpiece is a German pancake that was bigger than all 3 of my kids’ heads put together and sprinkled with powdered sugar with butter and lemon wedges. Nothing short of genius!

Before we checked out the lobby was just a prime spot for an impromptu photo shoot... 






Oops ... That's not my kid!

Rested and tan we thanked The Parker for a great trip and headed back to LA. 


It started raining on the way home…


So we "had to" pull over at the outlet shops! The All Saints outlet shop was by far my favorite. Amazing stuff for me Dean and the kids!

If you don’t want to hand out unhealthy sweets to your kids’ classmates this is a fun take on a valentine from Disney’s Family Fun. Get creative with the notes as well- these are fun to personalize! 

Materials:
Cardboard
Pencil
Colored Card Stock
Scissors
Markers
Stickers 
Hole Punch

Instructions

1. Make a template for your kids to trace around: cut out a cardboard heart.
2. Have your child trace the heart onto card stock and cut it out.
3. Decorate with pens and stickers.
4. Use the hole punch to make holes on each side of the heart and slide the cool pencil through.

Some other note options: “Pencil me in?” or “Cupid was here.” 

2. You’re a Great Catch!

Materials:
Ziploc Bag
Valentine’s Day Stickers
Goldfish Crackers
Sharpie

Instructions

1. Decorate ziploc bags with stickers and sharpie.
2. Write “You’re a Great Catch Enter recipients name here!”
3. Fill with crackers.

3. I Dig You

This is a great option for the really little ones and can be personalized with your kids’ favorite candies or snacks. 

Materials 
Small plastic bag and twist tie 
Ribbon 
Toy sand shovel 
Paint pen or permanent marker

Instructions:

1. Close a small bag of candy with a twist tie. 
2. With a ribbon tie it to the handle of a toy sand shovel. 
3. Use a paint pen or permanent marker to write your message at the base of the shovel just below the candy bag.

Crown-shaped cookies in hot pink pale pink and blue were among the princess-themed goodies available at the dessert table. Aren't they just the cutest?

No party would be complete without cake pops — even a princess-themed party! We love that the cake pops were decorated to complement the birthday cake.

Princess Cupcakes


Little blue cupcakes were also on display — and available for consumption — at the dessert table. Each cupcake had a pink paper wrapper and pink crown cupcake topper. Yum!

Caramel Popcorn


Caramel popcorn was also available for guests to enjoy. Handfuls of popcorn were perfectly displayed in blue paper holders.

Princess Party Favors


After the party was over all guests got to take home a box with chocolate cookies a balloon and a crown!
